“Talking to you in English,” he said, “is like touching you with gloves.”
Ok, now picture Olivier Martinez (aka Paul in “Unfaithful”) saying that and it just might be the most sexy sentence ever uttered. I’m not kidding. I love languages, I love the idea of bilingual relationships, especially when both people have learnt each other's language, and so this quote literally gives me butterflies. I won’t start on a commentary about love and languages here on this post, I’ll keep it on the backburner for a future one, suffice to say that in our most intimate moments, we tend to revert to our mothertongue and oh, what a difference it makes when we can use it from the heart and be understood by our significant other! While I’ve no idea yet as to what depth this book will discuss the implications of language on our lives, I can already say that I am deeply invested in this conversation on a personal level, having learned Italian after being seduced by my own "Olivier" and I can also say that the language continues to seduce me to this day.
Let me know what your "book in progress" is at the moment in the comments below. Have you read "When in French" by Lauren Collins? If you have, let me know your thoughts as well!
Happy reading! xo
